Metatarsalgia - Morton's Neuroma
Pain located in the sole of the foot, specifically at the base of the toes.

What exactly is metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia refers to pain located in the sole of the foot, specifically at the base of the toes.

Why do I get calluses even after having them removed?

The underlying issue is often a long or excessively vertical metatarsal bone, which causes excessive pressure on the sole of the foot. The body tries to compensate by producing a thicker layer of skin (callus). If we simply remove the callus but the bone problem remains, the body will recreate the callus.

I’ve been diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma on an MRI, what does it mean?

A neuroma is a thickening of a digital nerve (typically between the toes). However, a full assessment of all foot structures is essential, as the neuroma may not always be the actual cause of the pain.

When should I consider surgery?

We first attempt to address the underlying bone issue using appropriate footwear or custom-made insoles. In our clinic, we have podiatrists specialized in gait analysis and the design of personalized orthotic insoles.
If these measures are not effective, surgery is considered.

What is the surgery like?

The primary goal is to correct the bone alignment. In some cases, we also address the nerve directly (Morton’s neuroma).
Surgery is performed using a percutaneous technique. We carry out osteotomies (surgical bone cuts) on the metatarsals to restore proper alignment and increase the foot’s shock absorption capacity.
If appropriate, Morton’s neuroma can be released arthroscopically; otherwise, it may be surgically removed.
